Baltic Motorcycle tour

An 11-days motorcycle tour through Baltic States (Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia). The tour program includes visits to the capitals Vilnius, Riga and Tallinn, historical places like ancient castles, and the nature sites of the region like Curonian split, island of Saaremaa and Neman Delta. The tour starts and ends in Vilnius, Lithuania. Tourists are provided with Honda XL700V Transalp motorbikes with top-cases. The tourists are accompanied by our giude on a motorcycle.

We spend the first 3 days travelling from east to west in the southwestern part of Lithuania, which is the most interesting for riding, staying in 'village tourism" guesthouses and visiting plenty of interesting and beautiful places on our way.

Arrival day
Arrival, transfer from the airport to the guesthouse.

Day 1. (80 km)
On the first day we visit Vilnius – a pearl of East European history and architecture. The 700-year-old Old Town of Vilnius is one of the largest in Europe. We will walk through narrow streets, see beautiful medieval churches, visit the Uphill Castle founded by Great Duke of Lithuania Gediminas and hear a legend about how and why this castle was built. After lunch we return to the guesthouse, get acquainted with our bikes and make a short trip to get used to the bikes and local traffic and to enjoy picturesque landscape of Vilnius region.

Day 2. (308 km)
On the second day we start with a visit to Trakai Castle, once the residence of Great Dukes of Lithuania and the capital of the medieval Duchy. After visiting the castle, we take a road winding between lakes, then go up on the Kaunas speedway, which we leave in Kaunas for a scenic road winding along the Neman river.
At the end of the day we reach our second guesthouse, situated in the middle of the Neman Delta (it is impossible to ride here in March because the roads are often flooded).

Day 3. (227 km)
On the third day ride to the Curonian Spit, one of the most impressive natural sites in the world. Centuries of common efforts of the wind, the stream of the Neman and the people living here resulted in a very special landscape combining woods, sand dunes and water, not to mention the endless sky above. On our way to the spit we visit a village named Mingė, where the main street is the river and the main vehicle is a boat. After that we arrive in Klaipeda, where we spend some time, then we take a ferry to the opposite shore of Curonian Bay. We will climb the dunes to see the places where fishermen’s villages once stood, before they were buried under the fine white sand. Later we visit Nida, a small resort and fishermen’s town near the Russian border, where we have lunch (fish, of course). Finally, we return to our guesthouse.

We spend the next two days in neighbouring Latvia. We head north from Lithuania, drive through Riga, the largest city of the Baltics, and stay in Sigulda, a beautiful hilly area with two medieval castles founded by Livonian Brothers of Sword.

Day 4. (423 km)
We will spend the whole day on the road. We start heading north along the seashore and reach Liepaja, the second biggest seaport in Latvija. After a short sightseeing trip and a coffee break, we turn east and a scenic road across a hilly plain brings us back to the shore of the Baltic sea, to a famous sea resort Jurmala. We pass Riga, the capital of Latvia, crossing the Daugava river along a famous cable-stayed bridge, and end our day in a guesthouse near medieval Sigulda, in a small town which stands on the hills above the Gauja river.

Day 5.
Today we explore Sigulda and ride only a little. Sigulda was founded at the beginning of the 13th century by Livonian knights. Now Sigulda is famous for its winter-sports center, especially bobsleigh. Latvian bobsleigh teams training here win high places at every winter Olympics. We will also visit a sand cave, where the walls are covered with inscriptions; the oldest of them dates back to the 16th century (the date is written, you’ll have to find it yourself, no prompting!) We will also hear a local tragic love story of Turaida Rose, a young beauty that was killed in this cave in 1620.

Now we’re going to head for Estonia, but we don't say farewell to Latvia. We will take a walk in Riga on our way back. And on our way to Estonia we’re going to visit Cesis, famous for its medieval Livonian castle. Later we’re going to spend several hours in ancient Tallinn, Estonia’s capital, and then travel to Saaremaa island, which we will be exploring the following two days.

Day 6. (395 km)
We leave Sigulda early in the morning and proceed to the North, making a short stop in Cesis to see the castle founded in 1208, which served as a residence of the Livonian Order's Master for about 300 years; then we pass Valga/Valka, a small town divided by the border into Latvian and Estonian parts (imagine, how it looked like before Schengen!). Then we have lunch in Tartu, an old University town and the second largest in Estonia. Finally, we arrive at our hotel in Tallinn, check in and have dinner in the hotel's restaurant.

Day 7. (218 km)
In the morning we explore old Tallinn. Our steel horses will have a rest on the hotel's parking place, because Tallinn is supposed for walking. We visit Toompea, medieval High town on the top of the hill overlooking the bay, climb the tower of Oleviste church, which once was the highest building on the Earth.
Then we start to Saaremaa. After some riding we get on the ferry, which takes us to Muhu island. There we visit an ethnographic museum. Then we ride across a dam to Saaremaa and reach Kuressare, “the capital" of the island area of Estonia.

Day 8.
Exploring Saaremaa. Saaremaa is the biggest one of three big Estonian islands (there are another 1421 smaller ones). Its landscape still shows the signs of the times when pagan tribes of Livs and Ests fought against the Livonian knights in an attempt to keep their freedom, land and religion. That’s why the medieval churches of Saaremaa often look like small castles rather than houses of prayer. Another attraction here is the beautiful and diverse nature of the island. Picturesque landscapes will follow us everywhere we go.

Day 9. (338 km)
We leave Saaremaa and go to Riga. In Pärnu we have lunch and start moving south along the scenic Via Baltica – one of the main European routes connecting Warsaw in the Southwest to Helsinki in the Northeast. Riding takes about 6 hours, so in the afternoon we’ll have already reached Riga. The biggest city of the Baltic States, the capital of modern Latvia, a free, bohemian and artistic city during the Soviet rule, the most developing city of Russian Empire, the capital of the lands which belonged to Livonian Brothers of the Sword in the Middle Ages, it combines a medieval old town, endless Art Nouveau blocks and a modern city of wide avenues, skyscrapers and shopping malls.

Day 10. (292 km)
On the last day of our journey we continue along Via Baltica heading down south back to Vilnius. After we reach Vilnius, we check-in in the hotel and have a festive dinner and a group farewell.
