Many years later, they meet again. Both have changed, and now the tabeles are turned... Based on Pushkin's immortal novel, Tchaikovsky created one of the most emotional opera scores ever.
07.06.2012 um 19:00 Il Barbiere Di Siviglia
Count Almaviva enlists the help of the witty barber Figaro to come up with and ingenious plan to meet Rosina, the girl he loves. Doctor Bartolo, Rosina's ward, keeps her confined in his house, and Almaviva and Figaro have to overcome many obstacles until the Count wins his beloved. Il Barbiere di Siviglia is not only one of the most brilliant comic operas ever composed, but also one of the most popular ones.
Director of the perfomance Aik Karapetian: "There is no doubt that Rossini's Barber of Seville is a great challenge for any director, especially, as it is the case with me, if it is a director's first encounter with the art form of opera. The Barber is not only one of the most performed of Rossini's works, it is one of the most popular operas ever, so most people know this piece and probably even have an idea of how it should be done. I tried to find some new angle, something about it that had never been explored before -- all the time being fully aware of the fact that comedy is one of the trickiest and most difficult genres in terms of directing.
My decision was to turn the Barber's humor into something darker and more cynical. That is why I chose the French Revolution as a background for telling the story."
08.06.2012 um 19:00 Mazeppe
Mazeppa, based on Alexander Pushkin's poem Poltava, is a blood-thirsty tale of crazy love, ultimate lust for power, political intrigues, dreadful crimes, and merciless executions. At the centre of the historical and personal drama - the Hetman of the Ukrainian Cossacks Ivan Mazeppa, a very prosperous nobleman Kochubey and his daughter Mariya. In the fight with Mazeppa, Kochubey will have to lose everything: his friends, daughter, riches, honour and life...
A coproduction with the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb.
09.06.2012 um 19:00 Luci A Di Lammermoor
Lucia di Lammermoor's plot is loosely based upon Sir Walter Scott's historical novel The Bride of Lammermoor, published in 1819. The fragile Lucia is caught in the feud between two noble Scottish families. Her dreams about happiness and love fall to pieces in the desperate race for power and fortune... Lucia di Lammermoor is Gaetano Donizzeti's most celebrated opera.
10.06.2012 um 15:00 Götterdämmerung
In Götterdämmerung, the work's essential conflict between the longing for love and the greed for power - which Wagner developed and deepened during the course of the Ring's previous operas Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, and Siegfried - comes to a shattering culmination. The hero Siegfried unknowingly betrays his bride Brünnhilde. She swears vengeance - and sets off a chain of tragic events that brings the world to an end. Götterdämmerung concludes the Latvian National Opera's ambitious project to present Wagner's monumental tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen for the first time in over one hundred years in Riga. In 2013, the 200th anniversary of the composer's birthday, we will perform the complete cycle.
